Our Favorite 4th of July Recipe
What goes best with fireworks on Fourth of July? Great food! The celebration wouldn’t be complete without delicious food to enjoy with friends and family. So, from our food family to yours, we wanted to share our favorite recipe.
Leanne, a 15 year partner, loves kicking off the festivities with her delicious Berry Flag Cake. Topped with fresh in-season strawberries and blueberries, this red-white-and-blue dish is amazingly yummy. And I like to think it counts as a serving of fruit.
Here’s the recipe:
- 18 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 cups sugar
- 6 large eggs
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 3 cups flour
- 1/3 cup cornstarch
- teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
To prepare, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Cream the butter and sugar with an electric mixer until it’s light and fluffy. On medium speed, add eggs two at a time. Then add the sour cream and vanilla. Scrape down the sides and stir until smooth.
Next, sift together the flour, cornstarch, baking soda and kosher salt in a separate bowl. With the mixer on low speed, add the flour mixture to the butter mixture.
You’re almost ready now! Butter and flour a long baking sheet pan – 18 by 13 by 1 ½ inches is best. Pour the cake mixture into the pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
Bake for 20 to 30 minutes, then cool to room temperature.
After the cake has cooled, spread whipped topping over it to make a nice white field. Then decorate it with blueberries and sliced strawberries in the familiar shape of a U.S. flag and you’re done. Enjoy!
