Moments of Connection in Community Service

Michelle Nunn, CEO of Points of Light Institute and Co-Founder of HandsOn Network

In our work with the people of Starbucks, we’ve experienced your commitment to community service. But there is one thing that has convinced me that we were meant to work together – and that is our shared devotion to creating moments of connection. It is those moments of connection with other people that make us smile, bring much-needed comfort, feed our optimism and inspire us to pass the good feeling along to someone else.

At our recent Tribute to President George H. W. Bush, I had the privilege of sharing the stage with four former presidents and inspiring individuals who have devoted their lives to creating change. In meeting them and hearing their stories, a common thread emerged – they simply saw a need and wanted to help.

Service is grounded in moments of connection. These are the connections we make with the strangers we seek to help, the friends and colleagues we work with and the individuals who come forward to share how their lives have been made better that keep us engaged.

It is my hope that all of you will be part of the Starbucks Global Month of Service initiative and help us reach the goal of 200,000 hours of community service performed globally throughout the month. In those 200,000 hours, volunteers could:

  • - Increase success in school for 2,000 students
  • - Clean up 200,000 small parks and remove 4 million pounds of debris
  • - Renovate 400 homes in struggling communities

That's only the beginning. If each of the 60 million people estimated to visit Starbucks every week donated one hour of their time, they could renovate 120,000 schools during the Global Month of service. To help reach these goals, HandsOn Network and its 250 local action centers will help support service activities in local communities.

I hope this is done worldwide at all Starbucks locations. There is a lot of trash out there...anyway change of subject...going off the deep-end. Please join my petition to get pictures of cats on Starbucks cups.

@lizardlad01 - There are events happening around the globe. London hosted a volunteer event on April 5 and Shanghai has one planned for April 25. There are many more Starbucks partners and customers participating around the world.
