A Colorful Commitment

As a mountaineer, I spend as much time as possible on tall peaks. As a Buddhist, I spend a lot of time reading the wisdom of the Dalai Lama; he often speaks of the crises facing the natural world and the reality that this is not a time to pretend everything is good. What is good is that each of us has the opportunity to make good choices and inspire others to join simply by how we walk in the world.

My love of the natural world bridges my personal and professional worlds. At work, I am on the Starbucks™ Shared Planet™ team. This program is our commitment to doing things that are good for people and the planet.

This spring, we started demonstrating that commitment in a new, colorful way – by highlighting three coffees in new packaging to better tell their stories. While all of our coffees are ethically sourced, these three were chosen to highlight our work with important partners who are, like us, dedicated to doing things in ways that are good for people and planet.

Organic Shade Grown Mexico is the result of our partnership with Conservation International (CI). Starbucks and CI have been working together since 1998 to protect forests where coffee is grown. This crisp, slightly nutty coffee reminds me of morning sun on the mountain.

Big roasty notes describe Café Estima Blend®, a blend of East African and Latin American coffees. Café Estima Blend® is a result of our collaboration with Fair Trade organizations around the globe working together to help improve the livelihoods of small scale farmers and their communities. Starbucks buys more Fair Trade Certified™ coffee than any other company in the world – we bought 40 million pounds last year. This coffee reminds me of sharing a handshake while travelling the globe.

(STARBUCKS)RED East Africa Blend has flavors of citrus and brown spice. As part of our commitment to farmers, their families and communities in Africa, we are working with (RED)™ to help provide funds to The Global Fund. $1 from every bag sold goes directly to benefit children and adults living with HIV in Africa. This coffee reminds me of Ethiopia’s daily coffee ceremonies I experienced while living in Addis Ababa.

Give yourself the space and time to learn something new. Pick up a bag of one of these coffees, enjoy a new taste experience and discover the ways your coffee choice brings you pleasure – and how that same choice positively impacts countless others.
