Community Service, New York

New York City
How We'll Make a Difference Together
Join approximately 745 Starbucks partners (employees) and customers as we come together to help transform the community around West Harlem's Morningside Park.

The day will kick-off with a special welcome at P.S. 180 - Hugo Newman College Preparatory School. The group will then break into teams and gear up for the day. As a volunteer, you’ll have opportunities to plant and remove invasive species in Morningside and Riverside Parks. You’ll also be able to paint playground equipment and a mural at P.S. 180, conduct light construction work and paint at the Abby House, YouthBuild and Abyssinian Towers senior housing center as well as assemble gift baskets for those in need. All supplies and instructions for completing projects will be provided by HandsOn Network and generationOn, and their local affiliate, New York Cares.

A celebration will take place immediately following to recognize volunteers and honor the day's achievements. Festivities will include lunch, local entertainment and fun photo opportunities with your fellow volunteers.

Schedule for the day (Eastern Time):
  • Check-in begins: 8 a.m.
  • Welcome: 9 a.m.
  • Service projects: 9:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.
  • Celebration: 1:30 - 3 p.m.
Rain or Shine, We'll Be There
Events will take place rain or shine, so please dress for the weather. Wear clothing that is comfortable and safe, and that you do not mind getting dirty or worn. Outdoor, closed-toe work shoes or running shoes are a must and feel free to bring your favorite pair of work-gloves to round off your attire for the day.

Registration Is Required
Please register to participate as space is limited. This will help us ensure you have a positive volunteer experience. T-shirts will be available at the event for registered participants, so please arrive early for your choice of sizes.

If you can't make this date and time, look for another community service project in your neighborhood, and get involved!

Despite gray skies and ongoing rain, there was great enthusiasm among the 500+ Starbucks partners, customers, community members and local organizations. Service projects took place within a 20 block radius and helped transform parts of the West Harlem and Morningside Heights neighborhoods.

Projects included: planting and beautifying Morningside Park, packing kits and creating cards at Harlem Children’s Zone, revitalizing school grounds at the Hugo Newman College Preparatory School, installing a student mural with the Abyssinian Development Corporation’s (ADC) Youth Build, painting and creating murals at the transitional family center, The Abby House, and hosting a social gathering for seniors at the ADC’s Abyssinian Tower.
