We Are Excited to Announce That Digital Rewards Are Here!

The process is a little bit different than the previous paper postcard one, so take a look at these steps below.  Starting today, members in the U.S. and Canada will now receive an email to announce that a Free Reward has been loaded directly onto their registered Starbucks Card account.

After that, it's a simple process:
1. Visit any participating Starbucks store.
2. Tell the barista you have a Free Reward (that way you get to choose when you redeem your reward).
3. Present your registered Starbucks Card (or scan your registered Card on the Starbucks mobile app).

No more waiting by the mailbox, no more forgetting to tuck that postcard in your purse or stuff it in your pocket.   The Free Reward is loaded instantly onto your registered Starbucks Card account.  You can view your account online or through the Starbucks App to view your earned Free Rewards.  (Make sure you have downloaded the latest version of the Starbucks App.)

… And of course all existing paper postcards will be honored through their expiration date, so if you have them, use ‘em up!  Just make sure you bring your Starbucks Card or mobile app when you do.

You might ask, "What’s that, Free Reward?"  Yes, that’s another enhancement to the program.  You can choose any handcrafted beverage or food item with your free beverage or food reward.

Not only are rewards now tastier, they are quicker too once you reach Gold level.    Instead of 15 visits, you receive a free beverage or food reward every 12 visits.

With these changes unfortunately, we are saying goodbye to some other rewards.  Soy milk and syrups are no longer free and the free tall drink with whole bean purchase has been removed from the program.  We thank you for your loyalty and look to you to share ideas to help continue to evolve the My Starbucks Rewards program.

Best Regards,

I like the card process better since I usually gifted my free drinks to my children for their use. Now I will need to watch my account and then give my gold card to my children for them to use the free drink awards.

      Bowlesd,

I absolultely agree and did the exact same thing with my cards.

What is not realized is my daughter always left with a free drink and paid for a food item and an Apple Juice and sometimes usually met 3 or 4 friends at a location who all usually purchased items.
Lately, they have not been there within the past several months.
Unfortunately, their market analysis did not work as you read everyones comments.

I vote to bring back the paper cards also...

I like not getting the post cards. What I do not like is the argument I'm getting from the baristas about honoring my rewards. I have been told 3 times this week that I have no rewards available despite my account showing multiple rewards being available (which I have not used and are not expired). This is very frustrating.

I find it very difficult to find on the website the information for how many Rewards are on my card and when they expire. I don't mind the digital method if I could have that information on the website, not just how many stars I have to the next one.

The expiration date is buried in the Reward History calendar. Go to Rewards History, find the most recent star(s) and click on it to see the expiration and/or redemption date.

I agree! I like to concept of the digital reward (it is convenient), however, the information needs to be easier to find (expiration date) AND more prominent. I would appreciate it if the barista would suggest using the reward (they need visibility on their system too).
I have let 3 rewards expire b/c I was not aware of their existence and expiration date. This never happened with the postcards.

This is what happened to me too, my rewards expired and I didn't know how long do I have to redeem this reward. At least the postcards clearly shows the expiration date. Now I lost my Birthday Reward, which would never happen if there was a postcard mailed to me.

I agree with having the barista suggesting using the reward. I have lost many rewards by having the barista either forget to use it when I ask them to or, worse yet tell me I have none available shortly after I received the email. Also, finding the rewards information is not intuitive. It's pure luck if I ever find it so don't know if I have any or when they will expire. You need to add a drop down item "Your Reward History" or something to get me there faster. Very frustrating.

Same frustration as everyone else ... I have two free rewards, yet I never get to use them as my app on my phone continues to charge me. I'm really missing the postcards now ... please correct the problem soon!! When you spend so much money on a Starbucks coffee, it's nice to be able to use the rewards when you have them.

I'm having the same issues as the above posts as I am unable to redeem my rewards too. I can see that I have available rewards but I never received any emails (as mentioned was supposed to happen from Starbucks) to inform me that these rewards have been sent to my card to be used. Now one has expired and nobody at any of the store locations can advise me of what process I need to take to fix this problem. If its not taken care of soon, I'm taking my loyalty to coffee elsewhere.

I completely agree! Time to go elsewhere. I have had a gold card since 2008 and have never, I mean never gotten a card in the mail for my use and anything that shows up on my digital now disappears before i can use it. This is why when asked i tell people sits a joke and not worth the effort.

I too, like everyone else have not been receiving emails notifying me of my rewards. When I check my rewards section of the app I have to wait for it to load every transaction I've made since the dawn of time and then scroll through to find the rewards and then still you have to dig to find out how to redeem them. The app counts stars and boldly displays them. Our rewards should be as equally prominently displayed with easy redemption instructions. I've got 5 expired drinks now and no recourse

I used to be an Sbux partner, and since leaving the company in June I have discovered I'm lactose intolerant. No free soy? Really? I know it's only $.50 for the soy, but that adds up. In fact, we used to encourage people who ordered soy regularly to register their Sbux card so they would save every time they came in- and hopefully come in more often. What a shame.

OK....Very frustrated. For the last 10 times, none of the cashier let me redeem my rewards. What in the world???? This is a Starbucks failure or a way of not letting people redeem their rewards. I have three free drinks and still cannot redeem them. According to the baristas, I could only redeem at the headquarter store, which is 10,000 miles away. LOL....I'm very disappointed on how this paperless transitions works. I guess I will have to let me rewards expire in their own.

I like the rewards on the cards but DO NOT like that that expire. I lost two or three rewards this week because of that. This really doesn't work. Why change a great program? I show 2 rewards but nobody in a store can find it when I use my card. I actually changed my coffeeshop because I thought it was neat to get rewards... fortunately the other ones are still in business.

    • 11/12/2012 1:53 PM

I agree with those who are frustrated with this new process. For phone app users, there should be no need to tell the barista anything. Using a reward should be part of a selection in the app. A bit harder issue for those using cards, but I'm confident that the creative folks at Starbucks can devise a solution. Usability cases should have bee done, if they weren't. Same for being able to easily check the rewards earned. Shouldn't be a secret, buried in the app and/or website.

Starbucks earned my loyalty and enthusiasm by charging me the same for coffee with soy milk as it charges others for coffee with milk. If I could drink milk I would, but now I feel discriminated against. What set Starbucks ahead of everyone else was this simple act to level the playing field. While I like a discount for syrup, I can live without syrup. But eliminating the discount for soy milk is a game changer and completely undermines my loyalty.

    • allenderl
    • 11/12/2012 2:13 PM

I also got no notice of my reward. I carefully checked my email and while I got lots of promotions from Starbucks I got nothing saying I had a free reward expiring. I would encourage Starbucks to eliminate or extend these deadlines until they get the software working properly.

    • allenderl
    • 11/12/2012 2:18 PM

I typically spend between $8 and $12 in a visit to Starbucks two to three times per week (or more). I don't come because the pastries are the best (they aren't), I don't come for the fresh fruit (it isn't always), and I don't come for free syrup and I don't come because you have better soy milk (which is sort've true). I came to SB because with my Gold Card the soy milk in my coffee was free, because that made me feel really good because I paid the same as everyone else. Bring back free soy!

That's awesome, hopefully when I go to redeem it will actually work. I'm a bit nervous after reading the previous posts. Also, I liked the post cards too. This system is a nightmare. After yet another reward notice, I finally pulled the detail on my transactions and saw nothing added to my card. Only then after a TON of digging did I find where they were, as others said, buried in the app. If you use Passbook, you have to go BACK into the native app mind you. Then I find out I have MULTIPLE free drinks that have already expired since I didn't realize this was how they were being recorded. NIce way to treat a very regular customer.

Very disappointed. SBUXs thinks new program is EXCITING? Nope! It's exactly what SBUX does best: BS MARKETING. It's insulting you'd assume custs are that **** dumb. Here's the kicker: custs are not proactively notified @ the register they have rewards they can redeem. What a great strategy for not paying out rewards: "Hopefully they'll forget." Once my SBUX card is empty I'll be getting my $4 lattes elsewhere. And I'll not be giving SBUX cards to friends, family, colleagues, customers this xmas

I DEFINATELY PREFER THE POSTCARD TOO. I HAVE YET TO RECEIVE MY EMAIL ABOUT MY FREE DRINK. I ALSO PREFER THE FREE SOY AND SYRUPS.
AS MUCH AS WE SPEND AT STARBUCKS, I'D LIKE IF ALL THEIR EMPLOYEES AND STORES WERE CONSISTENT IN MAKING OUR DRINKS. I DONT MIND WAITING LONGER AS LONG AS MY DRINK TASTES BETTER THAN JUST GETTING WARM MILK OR ICED MILK.

It seems to me that these new digital rewards are designed to be missed and forgotten. Nowhere on my app (in a place easy to find) does it tell me how many rewards I have. I had to DIG for it. I didn't even know I had a reward. Way to go SB for making this so user friendly! All it does is make me want to never go there! And how are people letting 3 or 4 rewards expire when you need 12 drinks to get a reward?? Are you buying 6 coffees in a day? The new digital program just started!?!

    • earthame
    • 11/18/2012 6:07 AM

I'm very disappointed with this new system. Discovered I earned a free drink that expires in 2 days and the barista said I didn't. I have special dietary needs and the free sugar-free syrups and soy milk really made a difference to me. Taking those away has made going to SB everyday, twice a day (my habit) too expensive. I have begun frequenting my local mom and pop coffee cafe as they include these items for me free with my order. Sorry SB...I'm not a fan anymore.

Yeah, this whole thing is broken and mismanaged.

New Coke, Classic Coke anyone? Apple Maps? No "Start" menu in WIndows 8?

The ability of Corporate America to completely miss the mark and shoot themselves in the foot continues to amaze.

Bring back the post cards - or provide the flexibility for the customer to choose post card or electronic. Anyone remember customer choice?

    • mjcbur
    • 11/18/2012 10:12 AM

The way this should work is that as soon as an award is available, the barista should tell you that you have a free drink available at the transaction point and give you the option to use it or not. They should also tell you that you have one that is about to expire or that will expire on such and such date.

Lets go Starbucks, lets hustle a little but here.

    • jmaigw
    • 11/18/2012 6:17 PM

I agree with the comments on disappointment with the rewards program changes. Other than having to log onto this website to self track rewards, there is no means to notify me I have one. It's absurd and inconvenient. Additionally, doing away with complimentary soy and syrups was excessive. Decreasing the cost in general, or offering a discount to Gold members on these items would have been better. Bc let's face it, we spend a lot of $$$ here and we should be rewarded..through the rewards program!

    • rmeservier0

I don't work at Starbucks anymore but I still go because I know I can get great coffee and a non-dairy option for my coffee. - I loved this and loved that it was free even more. Today I found out that soy isn't free anymore. I like everything Starbucks is trying to do with my rewards but after reading everyone's post about not getting their free rewards I'm afraid to invest my money into something that won't work and now the soy option isn't free anymore. I have no reason to continue w/myrewards.

    • mdunn1982
    • 11/19/2012 10:29 AM

Just to echo the same here (hopefully their marketing department reads these things). The new system has provided a negative customer experience. The "just tell the barista you have a free drink" system goes against this supposed modernization of the process. I love using the iphone app, why can't they simply embed a free drinks/food section in within the device? Putting the reward deep in the transaction history seems particularly deceptive. I have had a number of rewards expire unknowingly.

I am also really disappointed in SBX. My credit card bill states my card has reloaded 15 times to the tune of $25 each time in the last month (we use SBX as a reward for excellent grades, good work, etc for our kids and we have a large family), but I have not received one email yet for any reward. I've bought a lot of coffees in the last month. There was nothing second-rate or deficient in my payment to SBX and I don't want second-rate (or in this case, non-existent) rewards that are promised.

    • bdraughon
    • 11/19/2012 7:57 PM

Since you've changed the system, I haven't received any free drinks. Was this the intent? The electronic system should be easier to use. Now the burden is on the customer to monitor their rewards and demand their free drinks. I've had five free rewards expire, not understanding the system. Way too complicated. Thinking of going elsewhere.

Now that I know these changes, I will not get syrups but use their free honey, lots of them. I see 1 of 3 rewards expiring in 2 days-I will c if digital redeem works

Just one more person dissatisfied with new program - I can't use rewards from the app at my regular SBX, since they are not a "corporate" location. They had no problem with the postcards ... just means I can no longer use rewards unless I am willing to travel to an inconvenient location, and frankly there are a lot of other coffee places between that and me - starting to feel like there's little point in bothering.

I agree with some of the other comments, you took a great program and ruined it. I got an email from Starbucks on Thursday (12/20) indicating that I had a birthday reward on my account and proceeded to redeem it today (Sunday 12/23) only to be told by the barista that I had no rewards available. I even checked my account last night and it appeared that I had two rewards available. I have lost one reward to expiration. Please fix the technical issues and notify people when they have rewards. :(

i prefer the postcards as I have not been receiving the notifications of the rewards I earned on time. The last time I checked, the rewards had expired. Not too happy about this new program.

This program *****. A company like starbucks should have the money to hire a developer that would make a simple thing like an alert of a free drink a tad easier for the user to figure out. shame on starbucks as this is corporate greed at its worst. The motivation behind this promotion is to purposefully ensnare loyal customers into feeling like they are getting something, while making it extremely difficult to actually achieve. Making the rewards easter eggs within the app is pathetic.

Very disappointed in one of the benefits that is now gone. I have a dairy allergy and cannot have regular milk. Not being charged for Soy Milk was why I went to Starbucks - I finally felt like I wasn't being punished for my health issue. WENT being the operable word. As soon as my gift card is depleted - I'm out. I guess I'll return to my locally owned coffeehouse. I'd rather give my $$ to local businesses if it's all the same. And now it is.

No email notifications of rewards. Cumbersome to find out if you have a reward waiting. I have not had issues redeeming, but have had rewards expire due to not knowing I had one available. System needs tweaking. Where's Stephen Gillette?

I agree with these posts. One should be able to redeem easily from the app. Also, the rewards are a response to money I have given the company. Why should they ever expire?

I like not having post card come in the mail, because I did not get my BD drink for the last 2 years. I would have to call and let them know I did not get my BD post card. I will see how this new way works. I hope It's better:)

Rewards program DOES NOT WORK! It's been 3 months and the licensed stores that I go to every work day still cannot recognize the earned rewards and have no timeframe to be able to. Since earned rewards expire, this has gone from a fiasco to a promotions fraud. BTW I cannot speak to anyone at Starbucks that can address this issue. I have repeatedly asked for postcard rewards until the system "gets fixed" but I'm told that is not possible.

I have a slightly different problem: I get the rewards email - but it doesn't show on the iPhone app. Not that it matters, since it seems that rewards can't be redeemed anyway. Someone asked if anyone from Starbucks is monitoring to this thread - apparently not. And what's with some stores not accepting the iPhone app, or letting you earn rewards? They CERTAINLY have the Starbucks name on the store - what's the issue? Starbucks, get it together!

i had (2) rewards expire on my ... both for 1/2013. i called customer service and she was more than willing to extend my expiration. no questions asked. one of many reasons starbucks is doing so well.

I have a question. Now that the rewards are on the card, will you get a star when you get the free drink? It is a transaction on your card after all. Just wondering.

Why won't the app let my husband buy me Starbucks without logging each other out? Not a very good incentive for him if he always has to ask for my password.

This website is a mess. It says I earned one reward, but you can't click on it and see how to redeem it. I ended up here--seems if I bring it to a store, the barista will scan the card and know, but I've had such bad luck with the stores not understanding the gold card. I'm going to give it a try, but over time, the gold card has turned out to be a pain and hardly worth the "loyalty." When you take away benefits, it sours you on the loyalty. It's become almost worthless in a way.

I had this one Barista say that my emails for free rewards was a fake and I showed it to her on my phone. She still couldn't honor it. So much for an easy method of redeeming rewards when you can't even redeem them. Also its been almost 18 days and I still have not received my Starbucks gift card that I ordered via online. Sbux is making me mad.

    REWARDS matter:
    Looking forward to positive resolution.
    - when ADDED another card, the "site" WIPED OUT my Birthday Reward on my 2nd Card.
    - I have a SCREEN SHOT to illustrate and confirm that "it was there."
    ---
    Have e:mail into REWARDS Program.
    * maybe this part of the transition on the Digital Program, and it still has wrinkles.
    . . . hooked ... hooked ... hooked ...aahhHHH ... on Starbucks.

I also wish they would bring back the post cards because the Starbucks that I go to does not do the digital rewards because they are in with Target so when I do get a free drink I actually do not get it because the nearest Starbucks that will honor it is almost two hours away.
