Get Ready for Muppet Mania

Get ready for a Muppets onslaught beginning right about now.

Stage two is the opening of a new Muppets movie, which will arrive in theaters around Thanksgiving. The teasers are terrific (“The Fuzzy Pack is Backy Back!”) and, like past screen productions (it’s been 12 years since the last Muppets movie), it’s loaded with big-name cameos.

First, however, is stage one, which is marked by the arrival of Muppets: The Green Album, an all-star compilation of classic material associated with the puppet characters. You’ve got OK Go kicking things off with the “Muppet Show Theme Song,” followed by the likes of Weezer, My Morning Jacket and Rachael Yamagata putting their spin on some songs that have demonstrated genuine staying power.

“Rainbow Connection” has been around for more than 40 years now and “Bein’ Green” was introduced more than three decades back. Kermit the Frog couldn’t have imagined he was paving the way for reinterpretations by everyone from Ray Charles to Justin Timberlake.

The adventurous artists on The Green Album find a winning balance by bringing new mindsets to the material with proper reverence. After all, they, like just about everyone else under the age of 60, grew up with Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo and the gang.

It takes brave artists to follow in such mighty webbed footsteps.

I wonder if anyone else still remembers the candy sticks with Muppet finger puppets that were sold at Starbucks stores in the 1990's? I still have my collection of them. Beaker and Miss Piggy are my favorites.

Next on my shopping list is The Green Album. Yay!

I remember them. I have a friend here at the office that has many of them at her desk.
