Cupcakes are Tastier than Ever!

Last year on MyStarbucksIdea, you let us know our cupcake recipe wasn’t your favorite. I think you even said the word “dry” – ouch!   So our bakers had a lot of work to do. We needed the moistest, most wonderfully flavored cake base to be topped with the most delicious and creamy buttercream frosting.

Megan, well known around here for her amazing cookies, set to work baking batch after batch of cupcakes to find the tastiest cake possible. Sugar fatigue (and likely a couple extra stops at the gym) didn’t stop her – she was determined to make this year’s recipe tastier than ever.

And I think she totally got it! Next time those cravings for something sweet hits try our new-recipe Signature Cupcakes in Red Velvet or Vanilla Bean.

And don’t forget Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching. If you’re an organized romantic you can preorder a box of four cupcakes at participating U.S. stores by February 12. If you’re more the last- minute, spur-of-the-moment type you can drop by on Valentine’s Day and we’ll do our best to have cupcakes available.

Be sure to share your comments and stories if you surprised someone (or were surprised!) with our cupcakes this Valentines Day!

I love your cupcakes. Thank you for making them. Vanilla bean is my favorite. I only get them if I've been a very very very good girl.

I got a free Chocolate cupcake with Peanutbutter frosting and it was fab. This has been my cake of choice for my birthday since I was 5 and I have it every year. It was 100 times better than the local cupcake specialty shops. It tasted just like mine that I make every year, for my birthday or course. Maybe along with a free coffee on our birthday we can get a mini cupcake too!

I have tried the cupcakes a few times now and all 3 times they have been extremely dry. I kept trying hoping maybe I got a bad batch or something because they always look so good, but I have yet to have a good one. :/

What happened to the original cupcakes you guys had (the ones with the little gold flakes on them)? They were so much better, these new ones are just *****. I have given these new cupcakes numerous chances and I always find them to be dry and bitter. The old ones were very moist.

Better than ever? Yes, better than BEFORE. Still not the best I have had. Comparing Starbucks standard with coffee, Starbucks pastry researchers appear to be listed still as a maybe non existant "job opening." Oh, wait the job market is so baddd. Well I didn't have a cupcake last year, so I can't really compare the new ones to the old ones. That being said, the cupcakes that are in stores now are NOT THE BEST. Not even close. I had the red velvet cupcake and was extremely disappointed; I only ended up eating half of it because the taste was NOT worth the calories :/ Sooo let me know when you improve the new recipe and maybe I'll give them another try lol. They look way better than they taste.

I had a cupcake yesterday and it tasted terrible. I had just one bite because I expected it to be heavenly, and it was nothing near that.

Ate a Vanilla Bean the other day...now i never tried them before, but it was still pretty dry. And there was way too much icing... but they do LOOK really cute!

I just had a red velvet cupcake. Sorry...its horrible. The icing had a horrible taste so then I tried just eating the cake part...it had no taste at all. I will say..it wasn't dry.

Being a lover of Vanilla Beans, I tried the Vanilla Bean cupcake back in December. It was very dry. For something with so much sugar and fat, it's amazing that it didn't taste very good. On top of that, there was not a single speck of Vanilla Bean on the frosting or inside the cake. Perhaps mine was a cheap batch. Then today, I tried the Red Velvet cupcake. It was not only dry, it tasted VERY bitter. Instead of tasting a *****-cheese frosting, all I tasted was salty butter-*****. :

I like the red velvet cupcakes, especially the frosting. But I hope they don't disappear. For some reason, every pastry I like goes away (I particularly miss those chocolate-toffee bars.) I'm not being paranoid--they haven't had the cupcakes at my local Starbucks for several days now. Starbucks management, are the cupcakes still with us?

I love these cupcakes. YUM! The best, but I really wish they had the vanilla in the Chicagoland suburbs. The vanilla was at the locations around here, but now they said they will not be getting them in anymore- only red velvet (great too). Can you please carry both and make sure each Starbucks has enough! I add an extra workout, but it is sure worth it for one of these cupcakes!

Can the red velvet stay as regular menu item or at least until mid March? So I can order it for my baby's first birthday? The cake is moist and not too sweet, the icing can be a little less sweet. But it's still good!

After reading this article I tried the vanilla bean cupcake on my last visit. I loved it! I didn't think it was dry at all, and maybe I'm biased because I love frosting, but I thought the amount of frosting was great. I hope to try the red velvet soon!

Although the cupcakes are mediocre, they are a little better. What I usually crave, though is chocolate. Brownies are too dense and also dry. The loaf cakes are the best choice, especially pumpkin, but sometimes I really want chocolate, and I have not seen that one lately. How about chocolate loaf cake with a drizzle and sprinkling of toffee?

I remember like 4 or 5 years ago, you had these absolutely awesome chocolate cupcakes. Those were so good that my friend and I fountain hopped for coins around the area so we could buy one and split it. (not proud of it...but that just shows how good those choco cupcakes were) Bring those ones back!! :D They were moist, chocolate-y, and fountain-hopping-worthy.

I've gotten a couple of the vanilla cupcakes that tasted sort of stale. However, when fresh, they are quite delicious (never tried the red velvet since I am not a fan). I have to stop myself from buying more than one at a time. I'm actually glad my local stores don't seem to carry them anymore; 410 calories per! They do taste like they were made with a whole stick of butter. I can't complain though, really can't. I didn't have any last year, so I don't know what the di

I'm glad to hear I wasn't the only one super disappointed by the cupcakes. I was so excited to try the vanilla bean (not a red velvet fan) and expected it to be so good and it wasn't. Very sad because most pastries from Starbucks are so yummy, esp. the loaf cakes...

I got a vanilla bean cupcake free and it was AWESOME! I could have eaten 5 right then adn there! At one point, Starbucks sold a lemon and raspberry loaf-cake-thing but they have quit selling it. I was so disappointed because it was YUMMY! Please bring it back! =)

Your marketing technique of giving away free mini-desserts certainly worked! I've had Starbucks pastries in the past and never cared for them so when the mini-desserts came out I would have never been tempted to try them. Thanks to the free peanut butter cupcake though I've started purchasing them on a fairly consistent basis. I don't have any suggestions to improve that one! They're delicious!

I hadn't been to Starbucks in a long time, but I went last Thursday and tried their mini carrot cake cupcakes. It was so delicious...I actually went back a few hours later to get more! They were moist, and the frosting went perfectly with the cupcake. My only wish is that they were made bigger(maybe they are and I'm just slow to realize it). Soon to try the red velvet

I was stuck in Detroit airport two weeks ago and I am surprise that they do not carry a classic coffee cake along with Madeleine. The baristas gave me a look and told me that they never heard of them. Are there any restrictions when it comes to area and supply demands?

Where are the AMAZING chocolate/vanilla cupcakes of the mid-2000s'?! We used to just wait for Feb. 1st here in Vancouver, B.C.--the most moist and delicious cupcake either of us has ever eaten. We'd eaten them for at least a few years, then abandoned SB when we bought an expensive espresso machine. We'd waited this year with bated breath, only to find that a) they are no longer sold, and b) you apparently changed bakers and killed the one thing we'd loved before abandoning altogether! Shame!

I agree......bring back the old ones!! Although; I'm talking about the ones from back in 2007ish-2010ish time frame. They were sooooo delicious and moist, and the icing......oh my God the icing, it was the most tastey "thing" I've ever had in my LIFE!!! It didn't have the fancy swirl design it has now and it had raw sugar coating it. My co-workers and I would literally buy 3, 6 count packages of those cupcakes at a time!! I remember them constantly selling out. Bring them back pleeeeaaaase!!! :)
