Hi, after much trying and time I finally found the valentines app does work. I think what confused many including myself is that one needs to hold the camera from the link given in the valentine you received quite far from the target heart be it on the internet which is what I used or probably the same on the cups at starbucks. I would say definitely hold your phone an arms length away from the target heart on the internet. I havent tested it with the cups yet. Hope it helps!
To see the heart peel away and show flying hearts,
you have to hold camera on it's longer side,
length wise, just set the phone on table and
cup about a foot away and watch the heart!

Yes. Same thing on the cups. Stay back about 1-2 feet. i spent 15 minutes adjusting my phone right on top of it. Thanks for the tip. :-)
Thanks for sharing, petlover1 and danconnery! It's true, the app works best when the scanning device is held at an arm's length away from the cup or the image on the screen. Apologies for not including this info in our post above. We're thrilled you were able to discover how to get the app to work! Thank you for helping others enjoy the experience as well!
I suggest the nice Starbucks people add to the FAQs to hold the phone 1-2 feet away from the image being scanned. I finally got it to work that way, only after reading tips online above!
I have tried unsuccessfully to get the stupid app to work. I have tried all the tips here, too, and still not working. An app this hard to work is pointless. Christmas ones were fun. This is aggravating beyond belief. NO LOVE for Valentines #fail.
The fact that Starbucks would come up with a coffee name blonde and have a commercial featuring a white blonde female is gross disrespect and insensitivey to all people of color.
I am a blonde and I take no offense at this at all! But then maybe I am am too dumb to realize I am being offended? :) Lighten up!

A BLONDE THING - Dear 'theresattseattle', Your Comment is so FUNNY and I'm not Blonde. I have tried the coffee and it is great. How they came up with the name I don't know. But why take a darn name to heart. That person must have a sad heart. And I'm sorry for them.. Please Get Well ! But it is people like that that make the world go around. They just gave somebody eles something eles to think about.

Omg wow you are way too sensitive. What do you suggest they call their lightest roast?! I suppose you take offense at a common dessert called the Blondie (light cookie/brownie thing with ice cream and caramel in top)?
I couldn't get it to work until I adapted the tip above about distance from cup. Lay the cup down with the heart facing up (empty cup of course). Keeping pulling the phone camera closer to you until that word LOVE blanks and the heart is solid pink. Then you can interact with flying hearts by flicking them with your finger! Wish I'd discovered this with the Christmas cups! :-/

I downloaded the app....and excitedly went to a nearby Starbucks to try it out. BUT...I was SOOO bummed because they didn't have the limited edition Valentine's cups!! If the company is going to offer apps, then make sure the cups are available. Very disappointing. I did try it out with the heart on this page...very cute! Bought some e-Gift cards, and would've liked to have used this app with my friends..on Valentine's Day...
