SRCH – Round One Recap

SRCH by Starbucks is off and running. Did you finish the first round in time to win a prize? Did you get stumped and find yourself wondering what to do next? For those who want to see how it all went down, you’ve come to the right place.

The game started with a scan of the QR code in Starbucks stores or online. That directed you to the game site where the first clue was unlocked – a video of Lady Gaga quoting lyrics from her song “Born This Way.”

Toward the end of the video she held up a hand to reveal the Shazam logo stuck to her palm. That was your clue to tag Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” using the Shazam app. If you did this, you were served up the next clue, which read “To find your next clue find the right lyrics. @SRCH”

This clue directed you to the SRCH Twitter feed where you had to find a tweet containing lyrics to “Born This Way.” That tweet contained a twitpic; if you clicked on that, you saw a screenshot of the Starbucks.com home page with “Lady Gaga” written in the search field.

So, naturally, the next step was to go to the Starbucks.com site and searched for “Lady Gaga”. One of the two search results generated led to a blog post where the target SRCH image was located.

If you clicked on the image in time, you saw a note that said you were the winner of a $10 Starbucks Card eGift.

Winners were required to fill out a short contact form to claim their prize. If you win a prize, you should expect to receive an email from us within two weeks of your grand accomplishment!

That was just the first of seven rounds. The next six rounds may be a little bit more challenging, but the prizes will become even more enticing. It’s okay to share clues, short cuts and hints with your friends – in fact, doing so will definitely make your work easier! But remember, each round is a race to the finish to claim a prize.

So be sure to hit the ground running at 10 a.m. PST on the days new rounds are unlocked. The next round starts on Monday, May 23. Good luck and good searching!

For those of us with android phones, this is a bit of a bummer. And there are millions of us.

Oh... that's where I was getting tripped up. I knew that was the Shazam logo, but I was trying to tag her "speaking" the clue. Then I tried searching for that song on Shazam's site. I wasn't thinking outside of the box and tagging the song itself from my music library...

The Shazam part didn't work for me. I have a Blackberry and I never got the next clue when I tagged the song in Shazam. Thankfully there was twitter to help me out. :)

So, this contest is only open to participants who have a smart phone? What about those of us who can't afford a smart phone or otherwise do not choose to have one? How does one participate without a smart phone, or is that even possible?

Starbucks is choosing to market to a specific demographic through the use of social media. Unfortunately, you are not in their demographic, but that shouldn't make playing the game impossible. I have an iPhone, a Twitter account, and a Shazaam app, but I didn't use any of them in finding the clue. I simply watched the clue video, realized she was quoting her song "Born This Way" (I googled the lyrics), and typed in "Born This Way" into the Starbucks.com search bar.

I won both the first and second games but never got a form to fill out. Should I be worried? I've gone back to the site but I can't get a form to appear.

For both rounds I solved the clues to get to the final SRCH piece and the game tells me that I got there without following the clue trail. There were definitely four steps, not sure if I need to play all in one window or what, but its frustrating. Fun game though.

well I guess I don't belong here at all. I don't have the technology and worse the brain to figure out the tech..so playing a game only works if you have a full deck..guess i will go back to baking cookies and smile pretty. Cookies anyone?

Its pretty wrong, that it was opened only to those who had phones that would allow you to do that. Not everyone can afford one.

So... mind explaining why this didn't work if you had an iPad then? I tagged the song (which I can prove with my tweet). Did I ever see that "Welcome to SRCH"? Nope. Bravo Starbucks. Bravo.
