Collaborating on projects that support social investments in coffee-, tea- and cocoa-producing communities. From farm to cup, Starbucks Coffee Company believes it is important to be a good neighbor. In addition to the company’s ethical buying practices, the Starbucks Foundation teams up with nonprofit organizations to invest in projects that benefit coffee, tea and cocoa communities.
As an example, Starbucks and CARE, an international humanitarian and development organization, have worked together since 1991.
Recently Starbucks committed over $500,000 to a three-year program to improve economic and education prospects for more than 6,000 people in Western Hararghe, a part of rural Ethiopia known for its high-quality coffee.
This grant will help 1,500 households improve adult literacy, reduce crop losses, and establish microcredit and microfinance services. It will also be especially sensitive to balancing women’s learning with cultural sensitivities and their existing workloads.
Starbucks supports sustainable programs that meet these communities’ specific needs. Projects have included improving access to education and agricultural training, microfinance and microcredit services, improving biodiversity conservation, and increasing levels of health, nutrition and water sanitation.
