All children should have equal access to literacy and social skill development activities, regardless of their socioeconomic or parental conditions. The more one-to-one
attention children receive between ages 3 and 5, the better prepared they will be for kindergarten and beyond.
Jumpstart was founded in 1993 on the belief that early education is the best investment citizens and government can make in the future success of our nation. Today, this national non-profit organization works with more than 8,000 preschool children in 24 states and Washington, DC.
Jumpstart recruits and trains college students to serve in a yearlong one-to-one relationship with preschool children from low-income backgrounds. As a result of the intensive, individualized attention
that Jumpstart provides, children build language and literacy, social, and initiative skills – skills that provide the necessary groundwork for later academic and social success.
Starbucks became Jumpstart’s Official Growth Partner in 2001 in support of Jumpstart’s mission to work toward the day when every child in America enters school prepared to succeed. Since that time, Jumpstart has tripled in size and has become one of the fastest growing non-profits in America. In 2005, The Starbucks Foundation renewed its commitment to Jumpstart and to literacy with a $1.5 million donation over three years. This support will help Jumpstart continue its work with preschoolers, families, and college students as well as expand to new communities nationwide.

is about much more than financial support. In honor of Jumpstart’s 10th anniversary, Starbucks volunteered its services to re-brand the organization and update the Jumpstart’s logo, tagline and Web site. In addition, Jumpstart sites and Starbucks stores across the country collaborate to build local support for literacy.
From organizing in-store book and supply drives, to sponsoring Jumpstart’s campus-based learning events and building children’s libraries at Jumpstart’s partner preschools, Starbucks and Jumpstart build social support for children’s literacy and education around the country.
