Building stores responsibly Starbucks recognizes the distinct environmental impacts of our retail store ![]() Through our Environmental Footprint Analysis, we identified solid waste generation, recycling, and energy and water consumption as the major impacts of our retail operations. Starbucks performed a gap analysis of the company’s current system against the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building scoring system. Starbucks is using the findings of this analysis to test a number of environmental performance improvement initiatives. For the last two years, Starbucks has played a leading role on the Retail Development Committee of the USGBC. Our involvement has been focused on developing a scorecard for retailers, based on USGBC’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. Originally intended to pilot in 2003, the project is now expected to be introduced in 2004. This illustration identifies some measures we are incorporating in the design of our stores. These measures are aimed at conserving resources and improving environmental performance. |
